SMALLHOLDER Meeting with EU Supermarkets and Launch of VIDEO-Fruit-Logistica Berlin 2010
The Smallholder Project plans to have a series of activities during this year's Fruit Logistica Berlin Exhibition. These will include:
- A Launch of a Smallholder Production Practices Video -- showing step-by-step how smallholders are able to comply to GLOBALGAP standard. The video has been necessitated by a request by several supermarkets in Europe to have a visual real-life documentation of how smallholders comply with the standard. It has been challenging to illustrate compliance practices using cartoon drawings or still snap-shots. The Video is being shot at Mwea are of Kenya, where there is a longstanding tradition of implementation of GLOBALGAP standard by smallholders.
- A meeting between some EU Supermarket Procurement Managers and producers/Suppliers of Smallholder produce to the EU on 1st February 2010 (on invitation only): Several Supermarkets who are Members of the Fruit and Vegetable Sector Committee of GLOBALGAP have confirmed attendance. We plan to have 7 smallholder rep companies/organizations from Africa attending this meeting, which aims at enhancing understanding and confidence between supermarkets and smallholder production systems in Africa, with a view to enhancing market access for smallholder produce. This meeting will be restricted to invited African companies and supermarkets only, and will be organized by GLOBALGAP Secretariat in conjunction wit Africa Observer Project.
